Giuliani's work for drug maker probed

In western Virginia, far from the limelight, United States Attorney John L. Brownlee found himself on the telephone last year with a political and legal superstar, Rudolph W. Giuliani.

For years, Mr. Brownlee and his small team had been building a case that the maker of the painkiller OxyContin had misled the public when it claimed the drug was less prone to abuse than competing narcotics. The drug was believed to be a factor in hundreds of deaths involving its abuse.

Test Candidate Words with the Sword

So much of media/pundit lip flapping over the past few election cycles has been devoted to the “Evangelical" vote. The term has been loosely defined at best, if not entirely mischaracterized or downright adulterated at worst. To examine Presidential candidates who would woo the evangelical vote, it is important to note whether they truly understand who it is they seek.

When the average citizen hears the term evangelical, mental imagery will vary from the true meaning, all the way down to some misguided equivocation to cultish demons like Jim Jones and David Koresh, or even Islamic extremism. Unfortunately, the liberal media is more likely than not to hold and espouse such misconceptions.

Evangelical, as defined with general accuracy in most dictionary entries, best describes the individual Christian.

No slowing down Tarter

Tough to stop in basketball and even tougher to beat on the track. The same sort of dominance is expected out of Tarter in the spring.

This spring, however, will be different for Tarter because she won't be worried about what colleges are watching her perform. Her big decision on where to attend college is already taken care of.

In September, Tarter gave the nod to Wisconsin for track. She wanted to attend a Big 10 school not to far away from home, and this was perfect.

Wisconsin captured Tarter's attention when the basketball team traveled there for a tournament two summers ago.

"It's always been one of those schools where you are like, 'Oh, wouldn't it be cool to go there?,'" Tarter said. "Then when they offered me a full ride, I was like, 'Oh, that's cool.' When I visited, I really liked it.

Dreaming about expedition to that secret lake

About then my friend Jim came into possession of an early model trail bike, really no more than a fat-tired motor scooter on a frame of heavy steel tubing. On our first trip we discovered that only one of us could ride the thing, and Jim putted off up the trail and disappeared out of sight as I trotted along behind. Seven or eight miles into what was then a primitive area, something bad happened to the bike. After Jim and I pushed that ungainly machine back out of the wilds, we resolved to give up the search for an easy way and just concentrate on fish. Soon enough, that area became designated wilderness anyway, with motorized use justifiably forbidden. These experiences took place before the backpacking equipment revolution. We thought we were pretty slick with our canvas packs lashed onto plywood frames.
