As an aside, every New Year's I am reminded of my first job out of college when I worked for a trucking company in their Mexico section. One of the big wig hooty-hoos was down from the corporate office in Kansas City, and he decided he wanted to walk the dock and talk to the men. When I told him they only speak Spanish, he just smiled at me with a wink and told me he had prepared for that. From my office window, I saw him walk to the dock and stop briefly to talk to each guy working their shift, and I saw them fall over laughing when he left. Curious, I asked them what he had said, to which they replied (when the could finally talk from laughing that he had wished them a "Feliz ano" In Spanish, "feliz" means "happy" and the word "year" is "ano" but with a squiggly above the "n" and is pronounced "an-yo" "Ano" is a word, but in Spanish it means "anus" Good luck to the Horns for next season, good luck to the teams remaining.

The Global Threat The News Media Ignore

Even in turmoil-wracked Kenya, Business Day Africa picked it up. But here? A few specialized environmental news groups took notice. The Voice of America broadcast overseas about it. But there was hardly a whisper out of The Washington Post, or the New York Times, or the Los Angeles Times, or any other major U.S. news outlet.

One is tempted to say that we Americans, collectively, are holding our heads in the sand, aroused by mortgage market woes and a brewing recession, preoccupied by a presidential election, yet largely oblivious to the mega-global issues on which our entire survival may depend.

The core problem: We still believe in the prevailing economic calculus of the past two centuries — that natural resources, from water and air to energy, are limitless.

Napolitano outlines her $11.4B budget plan

The governor said the state budget has to grow because more people are asking for more services. She rejected the idea being pushed by some Republicans to cut spending -- or even to leave state spending at current levels. For example, her budget for the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, the state's Medicaid program, is expected to increase nearly 20 percent from what was set aside for this year, to more than $1.5 billion. And state aid to schools is up about $163 million, to more than $4.5 billion. .

Educating Stéphane Dion

Halton MP Garth Turner and a handful of others were eager to hit the hustings and give Harper a kick in the pants. But folks like Dryden and other former Liberal leadership contenders were wary.

What followed from that Monday meeting was essentially two days of angst; two days of talking. The Liberals' Wednesday caucus meeting, which some described as the best they'd had in years, was an exercise in venting – worry, determination and frustration. The majority wanted an election avoided.

Dion dutifully took notes and then retreated, along with Deputy leader Michael Ignatieff, to work out the Liberal response. Against his own preference, knowing the barrage of ridicule awaiting him, a proud Dion had to write a speech that announced Liberal intentions to support Harper's government – for now.

Gale quits the catwalk

But she is quick to point out that some of the world's best-known runway and fashion models are aged well into their 30s and 40s. Naomi Campbell is 37 years old, Heidi Klum is aged 34 and Linda Evangelista is 42. "It just depends on the model and what level you get to," she explained. It's really an individual decision. Now, there's always a new girl of the season." Share this article What is this? .

Prominent local couple perish in 2-car crash

Ashley Boudreaux, one of Michael Herring's high school classmates, lost her New Orleans home during Hurricane Katrina. One of her first calls was to her friends, the Herrings."The first thing they asked me was, 'Do you need a house?' " Boudreaux said. "They put us up without hesitation, without flinching, when we were in the depths of hell emotionally. I don't even know what to say about all of this. I'm floored."Cleaning up the crash Pat Houston, who works for ACE Body Shop, spent three hours Thursday night towing away the vehicles and starting the cleanup process. He returned to the crash site Friday to finish."I had trouble getting this one up because it was all twisted," he said, pointing to the east shoulder where the Tahoe came to rest on its side. "This was the worst one I've seen in a long time."When the cars collided, Houston said the engine of the Jeep was ripped from the vehicle and landed on the westbound shoulder across the road from the rest of the vehicle.Houston said he's frequently called to crash sites between that stretch of Gulf Beach Highway and Perdido Key."It's a two-lane highway and people are going too fast to start with," Houston said.

Bucking the Tide on Private Loans

As the scandals and debates over private lending have grown in recent months, conventional wisdom has held that private loans are a necessary evil. Sure, students and their families are taking on debt that is typically more expensive and more risky than federally backed loans. But as long as families feel that college costs are otherwise beyond their reach, private loans will continue to become more popular.
